Why I love the game of poker
Over the last few years poker has become incredibly popular. There are a few reasons for this, mainly the greatly increased exposure that it has gotten. However the reasons go a lot deeper than that. Like a lot of people I have developed a deep love for the game. Mainly because it is one of the few opportunities that the average person has to demonstrate their skills and win a competition with something meaningful at stake.
Obviously the main attraction of poker is the money. There is a lot of money available to be won playing poker. The top professional players can earn millions of dollars a year playing the game. Obviously most people will earn considerably less but for the skilled player it is entirely possible to make a living playing poker. Of course it is also possible to lose a great deal of money playing poker. However if you are a skilled player you can likely find enough inexperienced players to play against that you can make a living at it.
The other thing that I love about poker is that it is a game of skill. Obviously you have to risk money to win but it isn't gambling in the same sense that a game of chance is. Skill is an important factor in determining your success. That means that if you put in the effort to learn how to play the game you can win a lot of money. Obviously luck is a factor in poker but it isn't everything the way it is in other games. Over the long haul the better player will come out ahead.
I also love poker because it is a game of strategy. In order to be successful at it you need to be able to guess what your opponent has and what he is going to do. This is the basis of most games and many other aspects of life. Being good at it will prepare you for a wide range of careers. It may not seem like it but there are few better training grounds for the world of business than the poker tables. You will find that the skills that you learn there will come in handy in almost any profession.
I also love the fact that poker provides the opportunity for competition. When all is said and done it comes down to just you against the other players at the table, often just one player. The player who plays his hand best will win. This is the very essence of competition; it's why we play sports. In a world where finding the opportunity to play competitive sports isn't easy for most people poker makes a great substitute. It gives you a chance to demonstrate your skill and to beat other players in game where there is a real prize at stake.
